In this scene, Lady Macbeth was sleepwalking. When doing this she had ordered all her servants before going to bed to keep the lights on which is a sign of emotional trauma, maybe fear. This could be suspicious to the doctor and the gentle lady if she is scared of something. When lady Macbeth is sleepwalking she also starts talking. She tries to reassure herself by saying “Banquo is buried: he cannot come on’s grave.” indicating to the gentle lady that she might have done something to Banquo but she promises to keep her mouth shut about it. Lady Macbeth continues by rubbing her hands together as if she is washing them. And mentions that she isn’t able to rub the blood off her hands and that the smell will always be there. Because the blood represents guilt in this play the Gentle lady will think that she is guilty of something that may be linked with Banquo’s death.
